Understanding what matters for people living with severe mental illness, a Comic

A 24H approach to physical activity, sedentary behaviour and sleep.

I drew this comic to accompany research findings on physical activity, sedentary behaviour and sleep in people living with severe mental illness by Dr Ilaria Pina. The study participants kept an audio diary, documenting their physical activity, sedentary time and sleep. The study showed how movement and mood can impact sleep and how thoughts can attempt to override daily functioning in people with a severe mental health impact. The activities and text in this comic are based on anonymised quotes from the study participants.

Each page shows a different day in our character’s life, demonstrating how small changes can impact the whole day.

“I very much like the Comic – the overall message and excellent illustration work so well. The tangled repetitive thoughts that attempt to override daily functioning are extremely well portrayed – verbally and visually.”
